Imperial Russian Ballet.....Russia....revolution....Climate Change protest Sunday......

Political policies on climate change are weak and little Ranga is not at the forefront of revolution

A sudden change in climate scattered the protestors.

Clive Hamilton: Why are we ignoring climate change?

Climate Action Newcastle invites you to attend our 2010 Annual Lecture.

Australian author and public intellectual Clive Hamilton is coming to town to speak!
The lecture will be at 7pm on Tuesday 23rd March at Newcastle City Hall, King Street Newcastle.

Clive is a renowned public intellectual and academic who founded and directed the progressive think tank The Australia Institute from 1994 to 2008. He is the author of many excellent books including 'Affluenza', 'Scorcher: The Dirty Politics of Climate Change' and his latest book 'Requiem for A Species: Why we resist the truth about climate change'.

The last year has seen a surge in climate scepticism and apathy. Clive will discuss what is behind this phenomenon, and why we don't actually have to take climate change lying down!

Entry by gold coin donation.
No bookings required.

Newcastle is into coal exports in a big way, not only that, two members of the intelligentsia with links to Newcastle disagree that global warming is driven by anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases. One of them is associated with minerals. Give us a break.
A spectrum of beliefs are valid yet a fringe minority can 'white-ant' or subvert action to combat climate change.

After the Climate Change Prayer Vigils in the Catholic church Tighes Hill.

Climate Action Newcastle has a site here.
We seek that wisdom will prevail at the Copenhagen Summit.
Church going could be seen as very retro behaviour. Only a real subversive would dare fly in the face of public opinion in that way!

Newcastle is going Solar!
A lot of people have signed-up so that a large purchase of solar panels together with their installation can be done for minium costs.
A Government rebate is another impetus.
As a move to help 'boost the economy' through job creation, the government also plans to subsidise ceiling insulation so as to cut back on household heating and cooling and save energy as a consequence.

The protests were in vain and the mine went ahead in the Hunter valley.
The government has just set a target of 5% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. We need more reductions. By various means coal mining can't lose out - yet.
Our lifestyle in this country is very extravagent. We have to pay the price for greenhouse gas emissions. We could have suffered losses for a worthwhile cause like climate change instead of 'donating' our investments to gangster financiers on the other side of the 'free' world.

It was nearly dark enough to switch on the lighting. Some were making the point that Christmas lights should be displayed only in December, not in November, because they waste electricity.

Old power poles have a use as a message board.

Criticism has been aimed at the terribly inefficient system that is the hugh coal export industry in Newcastle. It could well be valid criticism at one level.
Adopt a new way of seeing. Mining is highly mechanised and removes coal at an unprecendented rate. The potential power for total plunder is taken for granted. Coal pours away non-stop to other shores. Must we use up the entire commodity in one life time?
Can we forgo the so-called wealth from a minerals boom and adjust our lifestyle down for the sake of sustainability and global warming? Find other ways.
It would be unrealistic to imagine untold wealth and progress, with us as another Shanghai or as a fabled Dubai look-alike. Who needs it?

CLIMATE ACTION NEWCASTLE .................CAN..............can@climateaction.org.au

NEWCASTLE'S GOING SOLAR

Did you know that with the federal government solar panel rebate of $8000 for a 1kW system you can get grid-connect solar on your roof for between $2000-3000 or less, through Climate Action Newcastle?! You can become a renewable electricity producer, save money, and be a part of Newcastle’s first bulk solar panel installation!

MEETING
A public meeting will be held on Friday 5th September at 5.30 pm at Newcastle High School corner Parkway Avenue & National Park St, Hamilton South. We will be in the hall which is accessed by the gates on National Park Street. The meeting is likely to go for several hours.

At this meeting, Sydney Energy Coop and the CAN committee will introduce ourselves, discuss the program and answer your questions.
As we are sure you can appreciate, this will save a significant amount of time and effort on behalf of CAN to respond to many hundreds of individual enquiries.

The most important and urgent aspect of the project is to have applications for pre-approval for the $8000 Federal Government rebate submitted as soon as possible. The urgency of this step is that there is a 3-6 week turnaround period from the Government, and many people in the Solar Industry remain concerned about how long the rebates will be available despite Government assurances that they will remain in place until June 2009.Our advice is to get preapproved as fast as you can in case the Federal Government changes the rebate program again. SEE the web site.

PS A great spin-off is that the roof may get repaired!
